Understanding natural deodorant

What's the deal with Deodorant?

If you are one of the many who have decided to switch to natural products in your life, you know about deodorant.....Or, maybe you know about deodorant....Or maybe you are confused by deodorant. I mean what's so bad about aluminum right?

I have many customers stop by my booth with questions about my deodorant. Many are making a gradual shift to more natural body care and have heard commercial deodorant is bad, but are not sure why. In this blog I am going to help you understand what the deal is with deodorant.

First of all, when shopping at the store there are two different products for your pits. Antiperspirant and deodorant. Until a few years ago I didn't realize there was a difference, but they actually have two different purposes.

A deodorant ("de" + "odor") is used to stop bad smelling odor.

Antiperspirant ("anti"+ "perspire") is used to stop sweat.

Sweating is a natural bodily function to help us regulate our temperature. We sweat all over our bodies; however, our underarms, groin and ear canals produce a different type of sweat called apocrine sweat. It is initially odorless. Yes, you read that right, it is odorless. However, When mixed with bacteria this sweat takes on a less than pleasant odor.

When using an anti-perspirant sweat glands and blocked. While preventing sweat will prevent the odor; you are stopping the bodies natural function. In addition, anti-perspirants use Aluminum compounds to form a plug over the sweat glands to stop the sweating. I am going to be honest with you regarding aluminum. While there has been a few small studies linking aluminum to breast cancer, as of 2023 the American Cancer Society has found "no strong epidemiologic studies (studies in people) that link breast cancer risk and antiperspirant use, and very little scientific evidence to support this claim."

Aluminum is a concern for those with decreased kidney function. In the August 31, 2023 USA today article "Is it best to use aluminum-free deodorant? Experts weigh in." dermatologist Lauren Taglin states "That is why the FDA has included a warning specifically for those with weakened kidney function who may not be able to filter aluminum sufficiently."

*A Note about Baking Soda

When it comes to natural deodorants many contain baking soda. However, baking soda in deodorant often comes with complaints of rashes and skin irritation.

So ultimately, once you are educated on the risks and benefits, the choice is up to you for your own body on whether to use an anti-perspirant or a deodorant. If you choose to go the deodorant route and are looking for natural ingredients and sustainable packaging, I have a deodorant for you!
